Epicurus

Epicurus was an ancient Greek philosopher. He is remembered for his hedonism, the view that all of our actions ought to aim at pleasure. His formulation of the problem of evil, though one of the oldest, is also one of the most pithy:

“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is impotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Whence then is evil?”
